Elizabeth Tilston

It was a wonderful childhood for Elizabeth Tilston in Southport, which was near Liverpool. When the air raids began, her father built an underground bunker for his family, complete with plumbing and beds. (4:09)
Sixteen year old Elizabeth Tilston wanted to do her part in the war so she enlisted in the British Army. That was delayed for a while when they discovered her age. During the war, she met two very important people, the future queen and her future husband. (5:59)
The British Army made an ambulance driver out of Elizabeth Tilston. Her father had taught her to drive so it was a good assignment for her. She tells two tales about two of her more interesting rides, one with the most important VIP from France and the other with two German prisoners. (4:48)
Elmer "Wish" Wisherd

Elmer "Wish" Wisherd vividly describes his last big mission, pulling two gliders with a C-47 over the Rhine. He recounts all the action he witnessed and what happened to some of the other American planes. (3:33)
Fear was the great motivator that kept Elmer Wisherd focused on his airborne missions. On D-Day he recalls the dramatic sights and sounds of war and the incredible vision of U.S. planes approaching Normandy. (3:50)
In Holland, Elmer Wisherd remembers the terrible losses he witnessed after a deep freeze. He dramatically describes how planes went down all around him as he approached Bastogne, the horrific scenes that followed, and an incredible story of survival. (6:52)
On his flight into Normandy before D-Day, Elmer Wisherd recalls the silence and darkness aboard the plane, what happened when the pilot faced thick clouds and seeing gunfire aimed at the jumping paratroopers. (5:44)
