Glen Fischer

After being wounded in the arm, Glen Fischer was taken out of combat and transported to a hospital over in Paris, France. By the time he was healed and ready to rejoin his company, the war was already over. He made it as far as waiting in a replacement depot, but never actually went back into combat after his injury. From there, he was placed into occupation duty until February of 1946, where he was promptly sent home. (This interview made possible with the support of RON TODD.) (5:39)

Glen Weber

Glen Weber had his infantry training in the mountains and that was good preparation for scaling the hilly front line in Korea. Most of the fighting was done, but he was part of a determined force manning and fortifying the bunkers. (7:32)

There were no more big battles but there was still danger on the front line in Korea, even if you were just trimming bushes. Glen Weber had a close call while doing just that, but then he was transferred to a new unit in Japan where there was no danger but lots of calisthenics. His last duty in country was providing escort for the prisoner swap after the peace. (7:25)

Gordon Markle

It was two years before Pearl Harbor when Gordon Markle enlisted in the Army Air Corps because he couldn't afford technical school. At first, he was with the ground crew in a bomber unit. He soon moved to fighters, which made him happier. Even before hostilities broke out he saw death close up with a spectacular crash during training. (3:38)

Four thousand men boarded a troop ship in New York Harbor and what they saw in the next berth was not what Gordon Markle needed to see. He was a crew chief headed to North Africa with the 57th Fighter Group. (3:51)

The British had battled the Germans back and forth across North Africa and American P-40's had arrived to provide some additional air power. Crew chief Gordon Markle describes what that was like with the sandstorms, the C-rations from another war, and the German air attacks. He also learned that you don't want to cross the Gurkhas. The 57th Fighter Group moved from field to field, following the British around North Africa. They watched as British artillery pounded El Alamein and they took cover as German planes came after them. The Germans were finished in Africa, though, and Gordon Markle describes an operation that became known as the Palm Sunday Massacre. (6:02)
