Barney Barnum remembers his upbringing and one particular encounter at his high school that brought him to join the Marines. (6:16)
Barney Barnum recounts his rising through the ranks during his time with the 12th Marines, and then eventually serving in Vietnam with the 9th Marines. In a village in rural Vietnam, one of his most defining moments as a Marine began suddenly, causing him to think on his feet. Part 1/3 (6:04)
Taking continuous fire from a rural village in Vietnam, Barnum had to use quick thinking to get the remainder of his battalion out of the sticky situation. Part 2/3 (7:33)
After the firefight, Barnum had to deal with additional sniper fire and acted decisively to keep his troops safe. After all of this, he got some news from higher up; he was going to be receiving the Medal of Honor. Part 3/3 (5:41)
