Red Onines describes the mindset of the soldier struggling to get ashore at Normandy. At first, you struggle to keep your head above water. Then, you kneel and eventually crawl to expose only your face as you get near the beach. Then, out of the water, you crouch and run and zig-zag to present as small a target as possible. Regena Herndon wanted to join the military after talking to a recruiter at a high school career night. The fact that her brother would not talk about his experiences in Vietnam did not deter her. Basic training was tough, but she prevailed and became a soldier. Her first post at Fort Dix was a bad experience, but the next one, in Frankfurt made up for it. (4:07)

Regena Herndon was a personnel specialist, so getting assigned to a field unit at Fort Knox was a bit trying. She was at several posts after that, ranging from Korea to Germany. (3:53)
