Around Cu Chi, you almost never saw the enemy who was shooting at you. He would pop out of a hole, fire off some rounds and hide again. It was maddening to Tom Buchan, but at least there weren't many booby traps in the area. He did nearly run over a land mine, but was saved by a driver who cut in front of the tank. (3:25)

Tom Buchan finally got his own tank, despite not yet making buck sergeant. That meant he owed his platoon sergeant a favor and that turned out to be some night guard duty atop the sergeant's tank. It was in the dead of night that he saw the backblast from an RPG and time began to slow down. He thought he was done for. It was a close one, but it was the next one that sent him to the medics. Tank commander Tom Buchan was taking fire from a hooch, so he fired a high explosive round. Nothing, it passed right through. It turns out that's not the type of round you want. (4:05)

Tom Buchan learned a lot in Vietnam, a lot about combat, third world countries, politics, poverty and a lot about himself. When he got off the plane after it was all over, some anti-war protestors taunted him with hateful speech. He nearly lost it. (9:37)

Twenty years or so after the war ended, Tom Buchan was "walking the wall." A scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial had come to town and, as a volunteer chaplain, he was there to support anyone who needed it. He noticed a man sitting in a car nearby, just watching. (4:02)

Coming from a country farm and a one room schoolhouse, Tom Cash was drafted into the Army and landed on Utah beach a few weeks after the big invasion. He was picked by his sergeant to become a mortarman as they started their advance inland. He recalls an incident in which three hysterical soldiers were turned around and sent back to the front. Mortarman Tom Cash recalls when his sergeant sliced his backpack right off of him and told him he would just be carrying a mortar and ammunition. Battling German SS troops all the way, his unit advanced to Saint-Lo, where it suffered casualties from friendly Allied bombing. (6:41)

After his unit participated in the liberation of Paris, they called in air support to strike retreating Germans. Tom Cash describes that devastating attack and then the move to the Siegfried Line with it's imposing defenses. (6:05)

Tom Cash recounts the heart wrenching losses suffered in the Hurtgen Forest. In one day, his unit was reduced to less than a fourth of its strength. Many were killed with a baiting tactic involving tracer bullets. Then it was close combat, with bayonets and grenades. (6:45)

He slept in a cold foxhole most of the time. Tom Cash was near the Siegfried Line in the Hurtgen Forest, where the fighting was fierce. A tree burst from German artillery stuck down his sergeant and soon he was wounded as well. (4:13)
